Garden Discovery Backpacks
McKee Botanical Garden has introduced a new program designed to enhance the visiting experience for its youngest guests.
Garden Discovery Backpacks is a series of age-appropriate backpacks that contain a variety of educational materials for children to utilize while exploring the Garden. Children can choose from five different themes: Garden Explorer, Things with Wings, It’s a Bug’s World, Plantastic, and Survival: Lost in the Jungle. Each backpack includes an activity guide, journal and assortment of tools geared to its specific theme.
Garden Discovery Backpacks is exclusive to McKee Botanical Garden and was created as an extension of its Children’s Guide.
According to McKee’s Executive Director Christine Hobart, “Garden Discovery Backpacks is a way for children to create their own adventure in the Garden while gaining valuable knowledge about nature and conservation.” She adds, “Parents and children can work together on the interactive activities and experience a different theme with each visit.”
There is no additional cost to use the backpacks; they can be checked out at the Admissions window by the accompanying adult. Once they’ve completed their adventure, children are asked to fill out a short survey about their experience in exchange for two complimentary guest passes to the Garden.
Garden Discovery Backpacks have been generously underwritten by The William Bingham Foundation, The J.A. Woollam Foundation and the Vero Beach Rotary Charities Foundation. Content for the program was created by Lucie Burke and Pam Schlamowitz, with assistance from Sam and Linda Chancellor and Suzanne L. Liggett.
